FAQs

Does Acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture can be painless when treatment is carried out by a professionally trained acupuncturist. It is possible for some patients to feel a slight pinching or tingling sensation when the needles are gently placed but most barely feel a thing. Overall, most people find acupuncture a pleasant and deeply relaxing experience.
Is Acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is widely accepted as being a safe and reliable form of treatment when administered by a professional in their clinic. Howard is a highly trained professional who adheres to the highest  ethics and standards set by both the SBO-TCM and EMR in Switzerland.
At Basel Acupuncture we use only single use sterile disposable needles. These are immediately discarded after use.
How does acupuncture work?
From a purely Western perspective it seems that acupuncture has a direct effect on both the Central Nervous System and the Endocrine systems of the body. These two systems help to maintain and control the body via nerve impulses, and the release of hormones that regulate many organic functions of the body simultaneously.
Acupuncture can stimulate the release of Endorphins. These “feel good” chemicals help to relieve pain and promote a sense of calm deep within.
The ancient Chinese practitioners of acupuncture would simply say that acupuncture stimulates the movement of the “Qi “ energy and blood through the meridians and organs of our bodys thereby reducing pain, promoting health and at the same time warding off disease.
How many treatments will I need?
This will depend on your presenting condition, how long you have had it for, and your basic level of health when you come to the clinic. Acupuncture is most effective when given as a course of treatment. Anywhere from 6-10 acupuncture treatments constitutes a course. More information relating to treatment will be available during your initial consultation.
How often will I need to come for treatment?
Typically acupuncture is recommended 1-3 times per week at the onset of treatment. Usually acupuncture treatments are given more frequently in the beginning and as you respond and your condition improves the frequency of treatment is diminished. The duration of treatment will depend also on the severity of your condition and how well you respond to treatment.
Is Chinese Herbal Medicine safe?
Chinese Herbal medicines prescribed by a qualified practitioner are widely regarded to be safe and effective.  The various Chinese herbal medicines and formulas prescribed by todays TCM practitioners have been in use for many thousands of years. All Chinese herbs are put through stringent quality control testing and analysis prior to them being prescribed and sold.
Do I need a referral from my doctor before I can be treated?
No, this is not a pre-requisite. You can simply call the clinic and make an appointment. On the other hand, if you have been diagnosed with a medical problem or you have an injury and you would like to visit Basel Acupuncture for regular treatments then you can request that your doctor writes you a referral to the clinic. This referral form will list the amount and type of treatments that are recommended. A copy of this form can then be sent to your health insurance company informing them of the treatment that you are receiving and support your claims for any reimbursement in costs that you are entitled to receive.
What forms of payment are accepted?
We would appreciate cash payment on the day of treatment please.
Does insurance cover my treatment?
Please check your health insurance policy to see if you have cover for alternative or complimentary therapies. If you are in any doubt it would be advisable to contact your insurance provider directly and seek clarification on which modalities such as acupuncture or herbal medicine you are covered for. The “extras cover” insurance will usually return between 70% -90% of the cost of treatment.

Howard is a member of the EMR  and SBO-TCM. He is recognized by most of the health insurance companies particularly in the German speaking region of Switzerland.
