How does acupuncture work?
From a purely Western perspective it seems that acupuncture has a direct effect on both the Central Nervous System and the Endocrine systems of the body. These two systems help to maintain and control the body via nerve impulses, and the release of hormones that regulate many organic functions of the body simultaneously.
Acupuncture can stimulate the release of Endorphins. These “feel good” chemicals help to relieve pain and promote a sense of calm deep within.
The ancient Chinese practitioners of acupuncture would simply say that acupuncture stimulates the movement of the “Qi “ energy and blood through the meridians and organs of our bodys thereby reducing pain, promoting health and at the same time warding off disease.

Do I need a referral from my doctor before I can be treated?
No, this is not a pre-requisite. You can simply call the clinic and make an appointment. On the other hand, if you have been diagnosed with a medical problem or you have an injury and you would like to visit Basel Acupuncture for regular treatments then you can request that your doctor writes you a referral to the clinic. This referral form will list the amount and type of treatments that are recommended. A copy of this form can then be sent to your health insurance company informing them of the treatment that you are receiving and support your claims for any reimbursement in costs that you are entitled to receive.

Does insurance cover my treatment?
Please check your health insurance policy to see if you have cover for alternative or complimentary therapies. If you are in any doubt it would be advisable to contact your insurance provider directly and seek clarification on which modalities such as acupuncture or herbal medicine you are covered for. The “extras cover” insurance will usually return between 70% -90% of the cost of treatment.
